Licorice root

Glycyrrhiza; 1. A genus of widely distributed perennial herbs of the family Leguminosae that have leathery often prickly pods and that include the licorice. 2. The dried root of licorice that is a source of extracts used especially to mask unpleasant flavors (as in drugs) or to give a pleasant taste (as to confections).
